Larry Smothers as a young man had a flair for art but did not initially consider that as a career field. It was not until his mid-thirties that he began to develop a consuming interest in painting and began selling his work almost immediately. Encouraged by this interest in his work and inspired by his wife and two daughters, he decided to retire at the age of forty-six as a welder from a steel firm to devote full time to the pursuit of a career in art.
Smothers is basically a self-taught artist who originally started doing acrylic still life and landscape paintings. Wishing to develop his natural talent further, he decided early in his career to avail himself of the opportunity to study with an accomplished landscape painter. After his tutelage, he began working with oils and became more and more interested in western and wildlife art and incorporated garden settings into his landscapes.
Being an artist is a joy to Larry Smothers. His enthusiasm and love of nature is clearly evident in his work. Smothers’ extensive research into subject matter and creation of a natural background is reflected in his work. His creative use of color as well as his attention to detail give depth and perception to his art. Obviously, Smothers has found his career field. |
